Fall Prevention & Recovery Care Services

The statistics are frightening: one in four adults over 65 suffers a fall each year. The CDC reports that in 2019, falls caused over 34,000 deaths in people 65 and over. There were over 3 million emergency room visits that year as the result of older adults falling.

Medical costs for adults who suffer falls exceeds $50 billion yearly, and 75 percent of that is paid for by Medicare and Medicaid. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), that cost is expected to rise to over 100 billion by 2030.

Even if a fall isn’t fatal, it can cause serious injuries that cause life-altering aftereffects. Head injuries, fractured hips, and other broken bones all require extensive treatment and recovery.

As the NCOA notes, those who fall, even if they’re not injured, may develop an increased fear of falling that limits activities, leading to physical weakness that ironically increases the risk of falling, as well as social isolation, which increases the risk of depression. Avoiding going out into the community because of a fear of falling is a false solution, because 60 percent of falls happen at home.

Honey Healthcare provides fall prevention services. Our trained aides can recognize trip hazards and falling risks in the home and mitigate them. They provide support to elders who have balance, hearing, or vision problems that can contribute to falling.

If a loved one has already experienced a fall and is recovering, we can provide recovery care services in the home. Our agency is licensed to provide both home care, which does not require skilled nursing but can help with toileting, errands, and meal preparation, and home health care, which is provided by registered nurses or licensed physical and occupational therapists.

Take steps now to prevent falls in your loved one’s home. Remove area rugs and electrical cords that can be tripping hazards but beware also of slippery floors. Check lighting, especially on staircases and front steps. Make sure the home is free of obstructions and clutter that create obstacles to movement from room to room.
